Five ways horses change lives.

Where most people think riding and working with horses is only a physical process, the activity offers much more. Our participants experience growth across five main areas of wellbeing.

Contact
  • Physical

The horse provides a three-dimensional rhythmic movement, like the motion of human walking. This requires the participant to activate a variety of muscles. By changing positions and speeds, different muscles get improved each time for balance, strength, and relaxation.

  • Psychological

The movement of the horse and their presence has a calming effect, allowing for relaxation and release of tension. It creates opportunities to learn new skills, helps with emotional control and self-discipline, and increases self-confidence and self-awareness.

  • Social

Horses, and the people around them, can offer new friendships. This starts on arrival at the centre and often develops into friendships outside in the community. To make such friendships, especially with the horse, communication develops—either in words, body language, or simply "being there".

  • Educational

Caring and learning through horses is fun. It improves the ability to read/write letters, follow patterns (obstacle courses), recognize colors and games, motor planning and focus (following instructions), and an awareness of form and space by riding indoors, outdoors, and out in the paddock.

  • Recreational (have fun!)

Whether riding or being around horses, it's common knowledge that benefits are gained through laughter, fun and expression of emotions. It creates an opportunity for a chat, a weekly catch up, teamwork, and an understanding of the horse. Horse riding then becomes a weekly sport for many!

    Mounted Programs

Our mounted programs help to build core strength, coordination and improve motor skills while experiencing the unique physical benefits of being on horseback.

Like all our programs, these sessions are designed to reduce anxiety and support communication in an inclusive environment. All participants are supported by our trained volunteers to help improve their skills and abilities as the year progresses.
